Guacamole and a Dip Blog Hop

Classic Guacamole with Chips
Classic Guacamole with Chips

With the holiday season upon us, parties are in full swing. Whether you are hosting or attending, we can all use more quick and easy recipes for our entertaining repertoire. Enter the mighty dip. They can typically be made ahead and offer a range of accompaniments from chips to crackers, and from vegetables to fruit slices (as in this wonderful recipe). One of my favorites is guacamole. A simple recipe, I know and I’m sure you have your own. I like mine zesty and garlicky. Guacamole has the added bonus of being naturally parve, gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan (if you are gf of course the issue is what to dip in the guac). Sour Cream Smashed Potatoes and a Potato Blog Hop

Sour Cream and Scallion Mashed Potatoes
Sour Cream and Scallion Mashed Potatoes

Potatoes have always been my favorite. So much so that in fourth grade when we had to write a song or poem about our favorite food, while everyone else penned odes to bacon and chocolate cake, I gushed about the humble spud. To the tune of “My Guy” by Mary Wells. (You may recall that Sister Act was popular at the time, in which they also made their own version of the song.) Not a naturally gifted singer, I belted something out about “my potato,” and how much I loved it baked, roasted, mashed, and fried. Twenty years later, I can tell you not much has changed. Although I’ve discovered and eaten more types of food than I ever dreamed of as a child, potatoes still remain my ultimate comfort food in all forms. And mashed is a whole other level of comfort. Chicken and Corn Chowder and a Soup Blog Hop

Here in the Northern Hemisphere it’s getting cold (in some places it’s been cold for some time) and that means one thing: soup and lots of it. I’ve been craving corn chowder for a while and Nami’s recent post on Chicken and Corn Chowder with Roasted Potatoes over at Just One Cookbook pushed that craving right over the edge. Corn chowder has always presented a bit of a dilemma for me because really it should be made in the summer with sweet, fresh corn that’s perfectly in season. But something about the scorching heat just doesn’t put me in the mood for a steaming hot bowl of anything. When I really want it is Fall and Winter, when something so creamy and comforting is welcome. So, in a decidedly non-seasonal attempt to assuage my cool-weather desire for chowder I turned to frozen kernels. Canned is another good option. Sometimes you just want a bowl of chowder. Butternut Squash Gratin and Friday Blog Hop

Have you recovered from your food coma yet? Did you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and/or family? Pull up a chair and tell me how you spent your holiday (yes, I know I am being very America-centric here, and I do apologize to my dear international readers who have had to suffer months of food media turkey talk for a meal you don’t eat.) We had a lovely, lovely meal in Tel Aviv with fellow expats, hosted by our friend’s kind and generous parents who fed a bunch of homesick twenty-somethings. There was even cranberry sauce. Friday Shout-Out and Blog Hop: Thanksgiving

This is the shout-out and blog hop I’ve been waiting for: Thanksgiving! (Also, I realize it’s Saturday…sorry about that). Like many of you, Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday of the year. It’s crisp fall weather, making a grocery list with my father, and getting odds and ends the day before. Thanksgiving is sleeping in and catching just the tail end of the Macy’s parade, scrambled eggs, and the smell of turkey roasting. It’s stuffing (Pepperidge Farm) and buttery mashed potatoes, green beans and cranberry sauce – from a can, with ridges (I brought real cranberry sauce once and it didn’t go over nearly as well). Dessert is Entenmann’s pumpkin pie and ice cream. Continue reading “Friday Shout-Out and Blog Hop: Thanksgiving”

Friday Blog Hop: Chicken plus a Souvlaki and Tzatziki Recipe

In October (it feels like a lifetime already) my husband and I spent a week in Rhodes, Greece. It was our first trip to Greece, a place I have always wanted to visit. Now, living in Israel, Rhodes is a mere hour flight away and more accessible than I ever imagined. I must admit that I knew next to nothing about Rhodes before we landed, and I’ll go a little more in depth about the wonderful island in my upcoming post on where to eat in Rhodes. What I will tell you is that I fell head over heels in love with Greek food. The simple, clean flavors haunt my taste buds and the pit of my stomach calls out and grumbles for more. I have nothing short of a full blown tzatziki addiction and I can’t stop putting feta in everything. Continue reading “Friday Blog Hop: Chicken plus a Souvlaki and Tzatziki Recipe”

Friday Shout-Out and Blog Hop: Salad

Happy Friday! Another week has flown by (where does the time go?!) and I’ve bookmarked more amazing recipes. I hope everyone had a safe, fun Halloween. Although I didn’t have a single piece of candy this Halloween (I had some halva yesterday, does that count?) many of you turned to lighter recipes this week to combat the sugar crash. Also, with Thanksgiving coming up and all the ooey, gooey fall comfort food recipes hitting the blogs it’s refreshing to see some lighter alternatives. So the theme of this week’s shout-out and blog hop is salad! Continue reading “Friday Shout-Out and Blog Hop: Salad”

Friday Shout-Out: Pumpkin and a New Blog Hop

Yeah, you love my MS Paint pumpkin thumbnail. I had a feeling… I know I’ve slacked on the Friday Shout-Out for two weeks, but it’s back! (ok, fair warning: we’re skipping next week too as I’ll be on vacation…but then we’re back for good). And we’re better than ever. I’ve been strict in the past by selecting only recipes published on blogs that week, but that always meant I was leaving out so many incredible recipes and blogs! So this week I’m adding a new feature: a blog hop linky party! Why didn’t I think of that before?? So I will shout-out some awesome recipes around a theme from that week and then you can add all of your awesome recipes from whenever. Continue reading “Friday Shout-Out: Pumpkin and a New Blog Hop”

Friday Shout-Out: Nutella

This week’s Friday Shout-Out is all about Nutella! I remember my first taste of Nutella. When I was 16 I visited France with a friend and stayed with her grandmother in Paris. We spent our days wandering the streets and sitting in cafes, trying very hard to look chic and Parisian. We ate a lot of crepes, many with Nutella. I was immediately hooked on the sultry, creamy, sweet hazelnut spread. But although I always have a jar handy I don’t put it to enough good use. Luckily this week I noticed a bunch of enticing Nutella recipes that are just the kick in the butt inspiration I needed. Continue reading “Friday Shout-Out: Nutella”
