Way back when I was a nascent food blogger (of a now defunct blog more embarrassing to look at than middle school photos), only just discovering the wonderful world of culinary media, I was a member of Daring Bakers. It was an amazing community that pushed me to try things I had yet to make like flourless chocolate cake and tuiles (neither of which are nearly as intimidating now as they were then). But then I got a job – my dream job, where I professionally lived and breathed food – and my blog fell to the wayside, along with my membership to Daring Bakers. You can imagine my excitement when I began blogging again to see that not only was Daring Bakers still around (and my, how it has grown!), but they had expanded to Daring Cooks. Now there’s something I could really get into. Continue reading “Daring Cooks: Oolong Turkey Breast”

Guest Post: Hummus and Mahane Yehuda Market
When Shulie over at Food Wanderings asked me to do a guest post as part of her Israel Series, I was beyond honored. Shulie is Indian Jewish, grew up in Israel, and now lives in the United States. Her blog is simply gorgeous and is filled with incredible recipes that reflect her unique background. We’ve become great Twitter friends as well, and I urge you to find her on Twitter at @foodwanderings and on Facebook. I decided to write about my favorite culinary destination in Israel: Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda Market. And, because Shulie wanted an Israeli recipe to accompany it I selected one of the most Israeli recipes in the book: hummus. Continue reading “Guest Post: Hummus and Mahane Yehuda Market”
Friday Blog Hop: Chicken plus a Souvlaki and Tzatziki Recipe
In October (it feels like a lifetime already) my husband and I spent a week in Rhodes, Greece. It was our first trip to Greece, a place I have always wanted to visit. Now, living in Israel, Rhodes is a mere hour flight away and more accessible than I ever imagined. I must admit that I knew next to nothing about Rhodes before we landed, and I’ll go a little more in depth about the wonderful island in my upcoming post on where to eat in Rhodes. What I will tell you is that I fell head over heels in love with Greek food. The simple, clean flavors haunt my taste buds and the pit of my stomach calls out and grumbles for more. I have nothing short of a full blown tzatziki addiction and I can’t stop putting feta in everything. Continue reading “Friday Blog Hop: Chicken plus a Souvlaki and Tzatziki Recipe”
Secret Recipe Club: Pumpkin Granola
I’ve been meaning to make granola for months. I eat it for breakfast almost every morning with yogurt and honey, so why not make my own? I knew it was easy, I just somehow never got around to it. Luckily, the Secret Recipe Club gave me just the kick in the butt I needed. Each month members are assigned another blog and must make one recipe. It’s been a fun opportunity to discover new blogs and dishes. Continue reading “Secret Recipe Club: Pumpkin Granola”
Slow-Roasted Tomatoes and 10 Things to Do With Them
This post is not so much about a recipe as it is about inspiration. Anyone can slow roast tomatoes, there’s really not too much art to the process. The question is what to do with those beauties once they come out of the oven. And the answer is that the possibilities are quite endless. Once you taste a slow-roasted tomato, you will want to put them on everything! I know this post seems better suited for August than November, but we still have gorgeous cherry tomatoes in Be’er Sheva. If you don’t, then at the very least I’m hoping this brings you a little sunshine. You can bookmark it for next summer. Continue reading “Slow-Roasted Tomatoes and 10 Things to Do With Them”
Mustard-Lime Chicken and Cilantro-Lime Vinaigrette
After the sugar rush and candy binge of Halloween, we could all use lighter fare to give our systems some much needed nourishment. We’ve already established my love of all things cilantro and lime, and today I’ve got two more incredible recipes highlighting this perfect pair. I’m pretty sure we’ve also established my complete and total obsession with Pinterest, which is where I found these delightful recipes for Mustard-Lime Chicken and Cilantro-Lime Vinaigrette. I pinned them immediately and couldn’t wait to make them. Continue reading “Mustard-Lime Chicken and Cilantro-Lime Vinaigrette”
Japanese Chicken Curry
I’ve had this one saved up for you for some time. It’s another one of those recipes that I knew I had to make as soon as I saw it. This tempting Japanese Curry comes by way of Biren from the inspiring food blog Roti n Rice. Her recipes are always mouth-watering but this particular one sang a siren song that simply captured me. I couldn’t resist. As Biren points out, many don’t think curry when they think Japanese food. But it’s not all sushi and tempura in Japan, and curry is another delicious staple. Butternut Squash, Sweet Potato, and Chickpea Tagine
As Sukkot (and my vacation) draws to a close (ok, there’s a few more days left) I’d like to leave you with a recipe I developed for a meat-free Sukkot menu for the Jew and the Carrot. Sukkot is one of those rare Jewish holidays that doesn’t have prescribed dishes and while it’s all about the harvest, many still include meat on their table. I propose a vegetarian Sukkot to truly celebrate the harvest. This comforting, Moroccan-inspired tagine is so hearty it will satisfy even the most carnivorous guest or family member.
