For the first two weeks I was in Israel I made the foods that were familiar to me. Beef stew, pasta and sauce, even Pad Thai. But this week I was ready to embrace the beautiful flavors and ingredients that are so readily available to me and start creating something with some Mediterranean flavor. I’m obsessed with the figs here. They’re everywhere, they’re ripe, they’re bursting with color and flavor. I knew I wanted to do something with that. Shortcut Pad Thai
In New York comfort means ordering in Thai food. That was the worst part of living in the Bronx – no Thai delivery. We had to go down to 86th Street if we wanted curry puffs. A Stew for All Seasons
Every year around this time I start to crave stew. I always thought the change in seasons signaled this urge, the cold tinge in the air sending my brain messages. Stall after stall had vendors selling produce, eggs, meat, olives, grains, spices, and household goods. Continue reading “The Joys of the Shuq”
Sublimely Simple Eggplant Penne
Anyone who knows me knows I love pasta. It’s easy and quick to make, there are thousands of variations between the shape of the pasta and the ingredients you pair it with, and above all it tastes great. It’s the food I most often crave and definitely the one I most often make. Continue reading “Sublimely Simple Eggplant Penne”
Just like Mom Used to Make
The moment I was settled into my new home (it took about the length of a nap) I wanted to cook. Then I knew I would really be home. I asked Evan what he was craving after two months in Israel. I thought he’d say chicken Parmesan or pesto pasta, or maybe he’d go nuts and say sushi. Continue reading “Just like Mom Used to Make”
