Apple-Date Charoset (Haroset)

Prep Time
Total Time

An integral part of the traditional Passover seder plate, this charoset is flavored with dates and date honey as a nod to Israel, the land of milk and honey (the honey they referred to in the bible was likely date honey).

Recipe Type: Side
Yield: 4 to 8
Ingredients
  • 2 apples (I like 1 Granny Smith and 1 Pink Lady), cored and finely diced
  • 6 Medjool dates, pitted and roughly chopped
  • ¾ cup coarsely chopped walnuts
  • ¼ cup sweet red wine
  • 1 tablespoon date honey
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Directions
  1. Put all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly, breaking up any sticky date clumps.
  2. Serve immediately (with matzo) or cover and keep at room temperature until ready to serve (alternately make up to a day ahead and store in a sealed container in the fridge).
